ABOUT US

The Pit Periodical is a Montreal-based, quarterly print magazine that is comprised of selected visual art, poetry, essays, interviews, reviews of local goingson, a seasonal menu, and community surveys. It is equal parts earnest and silly. It is run by Chloe Majenta, painter, and Mariana Jimenez, writer, who wanted to create a site to gather avant-garde voices of varying disciplines under one roof.

While we love publishing finished and well polished works, we are also obsessed with diving deep into the messy inner workings of the creative process: showing the step-by-steps, unconsummated ideas, and playful exploratory phases. We believe that community is built around a tender and whimsical approach to craft, especially in a world guided by a hyperproductive, outcome-based philosophy. That being said, we never sacrifice quality; our magazine in itself is a keepsake that honours the talent of those who generously share their work with us. The design of each issue changes and adapts with the work that is inside of it. In that way, we get to engage in an inventive and experimental conversation with our contributors, readers, and with ourselves as artists.

Launches:

Every issue is released at the onset of each season, rounding out to 4 issues per year, with vague seasonal themes. For each release, we host a launch party to gather the contributors, readers, and friends of the project to celebrate the birth of the magazine.  At the launch, we have a musical guest, poets who read some pieces from the current issue, free snacks, free cigarettes and custom matchbooks, and cheap cocktails (specifically dirty gin martinis and negronis). The ticket for entry is $20 and includes a copy of the magazine.

Where to buy:

We refuse to have to digitalize the magazine as the object itself is the spirit of the project. For this reason, the issues of The Pit can only be found in print.
